Curren$y “Weekend at Burnies” review

New Orleans veteran Curren$y has clearly paid his dues: He’s been signed to both No Limit and Cash Money/Young Money and released six studio albums and more than 10 mixtapes in his decade-long career. But on his major label debut, the rapper — who could pass for a slightly more animated version of Birdman — presents further proof that in 2011, a career in hip-hop depends more on work ethic than rap prowess. Coasting on hazy beats that put a Southern spin on West Coast G-funk, Curren$y delivers boring, predictable rhymes about weed, money, promiscuous women and sometimes, nothing at all.
