Clearly, more rappers should sample Queen
Song: “Open Your Eyes”
Mixtape: Fear of God
Thank God someone can still rap. Pusha T spits fire over a sample of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”-turned-haunting rap tapestry by producer Nottz. The video is minimal and refreshingly free of half-naked females and random hangers-on. And it’s dark. And there’s smoke. We like this.
I’ve never been a huge Pusha T fan, largely because of all the cocaine talk. I mean, I get it. You’re a great lyricist. You sold drugs. You’re a great lyricist who sold drugs. You sold a lot of drugs. It’s quite possible you’re still selling drugs. Not only am I not impressed, I borderline consider you a traitor to your people, and I’m definitely going to need something more than this to respect you as a person or connect with you as an artist. That something more came on Kanye West’s “Runaway,” and here it is again.
Granted, Nottz didn’t have to do all that much here. When you’re starting with Queen, you’re almost guaranteed to end in brilliance. But he definitely achieved the ideal level of creepiness to complement Pusha T’s chilling, semi-introspective bars.
Please do more of this.
